Laura appeared to have the edge over Christy with a deeper high serve which Christy struggled to cope with. Christy tried to vary her serve with the occasional low serve but she unfortunately hit a few of these into the net. Laura managed to edge in front in each game and she went on to win the match 21-10, 21-15. Congratulations to Laura Webster for winning the girls competition and to both girls for serving up a cracking girls final.

The final of the boys competition was contested between Lewis Robertson and Paul Goldie. Once again the standard of play was very high throughout the boys final. The first game was a tense, nervous affair with neither player able to dominate play. Lewis managed to win the vital last few points to win the first game 21-19. Despite Paul's best efforts in the second game, Lewis managed to edge in front of Paul and Lewis went on to win the second game 21-15. Congratulations to Lewis Robertson for winning the boys competition and to both boys for giving the spectators such an exciting boys final.

Drumlanrig took the team award.

After the finals, Colin Blaikie gave the vote of thanks and Laura Turnbull presented the prizes.

Iben McMillan played Lewis Robertson in the first semi-final. Despite a valiant effort from Lewis with some long, hard fought points throughtout the game, Iben went on to win the first semi-final 21-14. The second semi-final was played between Cameron McCreadie and Laura Webster. Both players started the game on the same handicap and there was nothing between them until the final few points of the game when Laura Webster managed to edge in front of Cameron to win the second semi-final 21-17.

The final was played over a single game to 21 points and was between Iben McMillan and Laura Webster. In the early stages of the final game Laura found it hard to prevent Iben using her strong smash. Despite a sterling effort by Laura, with some long rallies throughout the final, she was unable to prevent Iben taking the vital last few points to win the final 21-16. Both players are to be congratulated for the high standard of play and for making the final such a memorable, exciting game.

The trophies for the handicapped tournament together with the trophy given to the Young Player of the Year will be presented at the end of the parents fun night on the last night of the season on Tuesday, 24 April, 2012.

Parents fun night in December, 2011

Another parents fun night was held at the main games hall at Hawick High School on Tuesday, 13th December, 2011. Unfortunately, the turnout was down on previous fun nights due to other events on that evening.

The youngsters and parents who did turn up had a great night night of badminton. Another parents fun night will be held towards the end of the season in April, 2012.

It was good to see parents entering into the fun spirit of the evening as plainly demonstrated by the photographs and videos that were taken on the night. I think the parents will have to do a little more training before the next fun night if they want to challenge their offspring at shuttle sprints.

Border Primary 'Open' Tournament - 2011

A few junior members from Hawick took part in the recent Border Primary 'Open' Tournament which was held at Kelso High School Games Hall. Although they did not take any of the top honours in the 'A' championships they did come out on top of the 'B' championships.

Phillipa Robertson
(Hawick) beat Jodie Aitken (Reston) in the girls singles event. In the girls doubles event, Phillipa partnered Sophie Younger (Edenside) but lost to Jodie Aitken and Jodie Black (Reston).
Lewis Robertson and Paul Goldie (Hawick) beat Dwain Patterson and Craig Younger (Edenside) in the boys doubles event. Paul Goldie's younger brother Martin also took part in the tournament and although he did not win any of the events, he will undoubtedly do well in future tournaments.

Hawick Junior Handicapped Tournament - 2011

The annual Hawick junior handicapped tournament was played on Tuesday, 26 April, 2011 at Hawick High School main games hall. Two pools of players played round robin games against each other with each game played over one end to 11 points. The top two players from each pool went through to play in the semi-finals. Henry Leask (0) and Gavin Elliot (0) went through from pool A as winner and runner up respectively and Paul Goldie (+6) and Lewis Robertson (+3) also reached the semi-finals as winner and runner up respectively from pool B.

Please click on image to enlarge. Move the mouse pointer to the left and right side of an image to view the previous or next image respectively. Use the "Close" button on the lower right hand side of an enlarged image to return to this page.

Gavin Elliot played Paul Goldie in the first semi-final. Gavin found the handicap difference too great to overcome and Paul went on to win the first semi-final. The second semi-final was played between Henry Leask and Lewis Robertson. Lewis did well to get to the semi-final by just edging out Rachel Goldie on points won in the pool games. Although Lewis played well in the semi-final, he found his handicap of +3 to be too small and Henry won the second semi-final. The final was played over a single game to 21 points and was between Henry Leask and Paul Goldie.

The handicap for Paul was increased to +12 to allow for the increased length of the final game. In the early stages of the final, Henry made a few unforced errors which allowed Paul to stretch his lead by an even larger margin. After a rather nervous start by Henry, he began to play more consistently and he started to claw his way back into the game. Towards the end of the match the score was 18-18 and at this point in the match it looked like Paul might pull off a surprising win. Despite a valiant effort by Paul, he was unable to prevent Henry winning the last vital few points and Henry went on to win the final 23-21. Both players are to be congratulated for the high standard of play and for making the final such a memorable game.

The final trophy of the season was presented to the Young Player of the Year. This is a trophy that goes to a young, enthusiastic player who has continued to show dedication and commitment throughout the season and who displays good manners on court. This year the trophy for Young Player of the Year was presented to Rachel Goldie.

Parents fun night another smash-ing time

The parents fun night that was held at the main games hall at Hawick High School on Tuesday, 29th March, 2011 turned out to be the best attended parents night to date with around 35 participants. Great to see so many parents supporting the event and taking part in the games.

It was good to see most of the parents joining in at the start of the session with the warm up exercises and stretches before starting the games. Everyone entered into the fun spirit of the evening as plainly demonstrated by the photographs and videos that were taken on the night. This event was hailed another great success by all the parents. Weather permitting, the next parents night will be held during December, 2011.

This season has seen a major change in the group that attends the Tuesday evening coaching sessions at Hawick High School. A few of the older secondary school players simply stopped coming along and the numbers of players dropped considerably before Christmas. The coaches therefore decided to open the session to any primary school children keen to learn the game and the numbers attending the sessions since the turn of the year have increased dramatically. Encouraging signs for the future of the game in the town.

Hawick & District Primary School Tournament (2011)

The Hawick and District Primary School Tournament was held on Sunday, 20th March, 2011 in the main games hall at Hawick High School.

Just under 20 youngsters competed in the tournament this year. Once again it has been a difficult season this year as the game of badminton is not being shown to a large number of primary school children in the town and surrounding district. The children that attended the tournament had a feast of badminton which lasted the entire day and culminated in the boys and girls finals being played between 4-5pm. The girls competition was won by Christy Anderson and the boys competition was won by Lewis Robertson. Congratulations to both players for serving up a couple of highly competitive final matches.

Although badminton coaching is available to primary school children at Hawick High School main games hall on Tuesday evenings, Colin Blaikie has been the only local coach able to take badminton coaching sessions during school hours. It is only with the hard work, dedication and commitment of Colin that we have been able to hold a tournament again this season. A little progress has been made this season with regard to badminton being played at the grass roots level with after school badminton starting to be provided at some of the primary schools in Hawick. The game is also being played by youngsters at Bonchester Bridge.

Parents fun night another big hit in 2010

On the 27 April, 2010, parents were once again invited along to the final night of the badminton season at the main games hall of Hawick High School for a fun night of badminton with their offspring. It was good to see the event supported by so many parents.

Despite a distinct lack of enthusiasm from some parents when they were asked by the coaches to do warm up exercises, stretches and shuttle sprints before starting the games, to the coaches surprise most of them were happy to  do these energetic routines and even the prospect of running three sets of shuttle sprints against the juniors held no fear for the parents. Everyone entered into the fun spirit of the evening as plainly demonstrated by the photograph and video that were taken on the night. This event was hailed another great success by all the parents. The next parents night will be held during December, 2010.

Regretfully, the end of the badminton season also means that the junior club is loosing one of it's most loyal and devoted players. Ross Elliot will be leaving the High School in the summer for pastures anew at university. Over the years Ross has kept everyone entertained with his mild outburts from time to time, normally when loosing at half court bingo to Connor, Tara, Grant or Henry. When Ross first turned up at the Tuesday night sessions he could hardly run in a straight line. Now he is the fastest runner in the club. He has been a great role model for the younger members and his infectious enthusiasm will be sorely missed by everyone. The coaches, Harry Turnbull and Colin Blaikie would like to take this opportunity to wish Ross every success for the future.

Hawick Junior Handicapped Tournament - 2010

The annual Hawick junior handicapped tournament was played on Tuesday, 20 April, 2010 at Hawick High School main games hall. Two pools of players played round robin games against each other with each game played over one end to 15 points for the younger players and 21 points for the older players. The top two players from each pool went through to play in the semi-finals. Tara MacTaggart (0) and Connor Telfer (0) went through from pool A as winner and runner up respectively and Gavin Elliot (+5) and Christopher Turner (+6) also reached the semi-finals as winner and runner up respectively from pool B.

Please click on image to enlarge. Move the mouse pointer to the left and right side of an image to view the previous or next image respectively. Use the "Close" button on the lower right hand side of an enlarged image to return to this page.

Connor Telfer played Gavin Elliot in the first semi-final. Despite a valiant effort from Gavin, Connor won the game 15-10. The second semi-final was played between Tara MacTaggart and Christopher Turner. Christopher did well to get to the semi-final by just edging out Iben McMillan and Douglas Telfer on points won in the pool games. Although Christopher played well in the semi-final, he eventually went down 15-8 to Tara. The final in the 2010 tournament was a repeat of the 2009 final between Connor Telfer and Tara MacTaggart.

Neither player was able to take control of the match in the earlier part of the game. As the game progressed Tara began to use the experience she has gained by playing for the Borders this season and started to pull away from Connor in the middle stage of the game. Connor responded with some gritty, hard fought points and fought his way back into the final. He eventually managed to catch Tara and then edged in front towards the end of the game. Despite some strong play from Tara in the final part of the game, Connor managed to hang on to win the final 21-18. Both players are to be congratulated for the high standard of play and for making the final such a memorable game. A video of the final will be uploaded to the Hawick Badminton website and to Facebook in the near future.

The final trophy of the season was presented to the Young Player of the Year. This is a trophy that goes to a young, enthusiastic player who has continued to show dedication and commitment throughout the season and who displays good manners on court. This year the trophy for Young Player of the Year was presented to Daniel Elliot.

Hawick & District Primary School Tournament (2010)

The Hawick and District Primary School Tournament was held on Sunday, 21st March, 2010 in the main games hall at Hawick High School.

Despite the number of youngsters being down on the previous year it is important that this event continues to be held each year. It has been a difficult season this year as three of the coaches that helped to coach the sport in the primary schools the previous year were not able to do the same this year due to work and other personal commitments. It is hoped however that some coaches may be able to return again next season to coach the game in some of the other primary schools.

Parents Night another Striking Success

Following on from the great success of the first parents night in April, the coaches invited the parents of the junior members to come along to the main games hall at Hawick High School for another fun event where the parents had the chance to play against their offspring.

Despite a major lack of enthusiasm from the parents when they were asked by the coaches to do warm up exercises, stretches and shuttle sprints before starting the games, the parents entered into the spirit of the evening when they actually started to play the game. Unfortunately, some of the regular junior players were missing through illness and the number of parents attending the session was subsequently down slightly on the previous event. Nevertheless, the event was hailed another great success by all the parents. The next parents night will be held towards the end of the season during April, 2010.

Hawick Junior Handicapped Tournament - 2009

The annual Hawick junior handicapped tournament was played on Tuesday, 21 April, 2009 at Hawick High School main games hall. Two pools of 8 players played round robin games against each other with each game played over one end to 15 points. The top two players from each pool went through to play in the semi-finals. Connor Telfer (0) and Henry Leask (+7) went through from pool A as winner and runner up respectively and Tara MacTaggart (-4) and Douglas Telfer (+6) also reached the semi-finals as winner and runner up respectively from pool B.

Please click on image to enlarge. Move the mouse pointer to the left and right side of an image to view the previous or next image respectively. Use the "Close" button on the lower right hand side of an enlarged image to return to this page.

Connor Telfer played his younger brother Douglas in the first semi-final. Despite a valiant effort from Douglas, Connor won the game 15-11. The second semi-final was played between Tara MacTaggart and Henry Leask. Henry did well to get to the semi-final by just edging out Ross Elliot on points won in the pool games. Although Henry played well in the semi-final, he eventually went down 15-11 to Tara. The final in the 2009 tournament was a repeat of the 2008 final between Connor Telfer and Tara MacTaggart.

Connor began the final with some well placed shots and managed to edge in front of Tara at the start of the match.  The good start from Connor made it difficult for Tara to recover, particularly when she was giving Connor four points of a start due to the difference in handicaps. The standard of play throughout the final was very high and the spectators were treated to some hard fought, long rallies. Connor's standard of play remained consistently high during the final and he went on to beat Tara 21-14.

The final trophy for "Player of the Year" was presented to Ross Graham for his dedication, commitment and steady development throughout the season. Not only has Ross hardly missed a Tuesday or Thursday evening coaching session in Hawick this season, he also travelled to Jedburgh on most Monday evenings to attend the performance sessions organised by John Peters.
