Borders Secondary
Schools Badminton Championship (2010)
The
Borders Secondary Schools
badminton championships were held at Earlston High School and
Galashiels Academy on Sunday 31st January. Under 14 pupils from
across the region travelled to Galashiels with the Under 16’s
and Under 18’s playing in Earlston with several schools being
represented. Once again, the Berwickshire High School squad
proved to be the dominant school, winning titles in every age
group.
In the U14’s boys, the final
was an epic 3 set match between Gavin McQuarrie (BHS) and last
year’s runner up Keith Patterson (BHS). A great game saw
McQuarrie eventually coming out on top winning 23-25, 21-17,
21-15. In the doubles final, Patterson extracted his revenge.
Along with his Berwickshire High School partner Jake Drum,
defeated McQuarrie and his partner Ian Richards 21-9, 21-10.
The girl’s singles was a no
less exciting affair, in a tense 2 set match Claire Hill from
Kelso High School overcame stiff resistance from Kirsty Millar,
Berwickshire High School. The result was 23-21, 21-17 victory
for Hill. In the doubles event, which was round robin
competition, the Berwickshire pairing of Kate Ross and Rachel
Scott won all their games to take the title from Kara White and
Joanne Deuchar also from Berwickshire.
The U16 girl’s final saw both
of the top seeds safely through to the final. Mhairi Deuchar and
Lucy Nevin, both Berwickshire High, met in a final which went
very much with the form book. Nevin was in fine form and beat
Deuchar 21-5, 21-18. The two Berwickshire girls paired up for
the doubles, winning all 3 pool games. Runner’s up were school
colleagues Emma Turnbull and Lisa Kerr.
There was exciting play in
many the boys U16 matches and in a tense final of the singles,
Andrew McQuarrie of Berwickshire, took the game 21-15,21-15 from
Grant McWilliam also from Berwickshire. Some of the best rallies
of the day were to be seen in the doubles final. In an all
Berwickshire final, McQuarrie paired up with Adam Don to beat
Grant McWilliam and Jed Purves. McWilliam and Purves proved to
be a real handful and were unfortunate to go down fighting by a
score of 21-17, 21-14.
Moving up to the U18’s, there
was further success for Berwickshire in both the girls singles
and doubles. Rachel Purves fought off a spirited display from
Laura Rae, Kelso High School, winning 21-12, 21-14. In the
doubles, Purves and Rachel Melvin were involved in great match
with sisters Laura and Joanna Rae from Kelso. The match was very
much in the balance until Purves and Melvin got the edge in the
final set winning 21-19, 14-21, 21-18. In the boy’s tournament,
number 1 seed Ben Leslie, Jedburgh Grammar School, made his way
comfortably to the final where he got the better of Stuart
Thomson from Berwickshire winning 21-9, 21-16. The doubles was
another round robin series of games. There were several matches
that went the distance but the Berwickshire pair of Alex Sim and
Stuart Thomson run out winners with runners up place going to
Jedburgh pair Danny Etieve and Craig Gillan.
Event organiser,
Neil Renton from the Sports Development Unit, thanked members of the
Borders Badminton Group, Annabel Nevin and Ann McWilliam for their
assistance in staging the event and making sure the day was
enjoyable for the competitors.
