Hawick & District
Primary School Championship
(2015)
Hawick &
District primary schools held their annual badminton competition
at Hawick High School games hall on Sunday, 26 April, 2015.
The initial stage of the
well attended tournament was played in round robin pools
with 11 girls and 12 boys placed into pools.
Following the
pool games the top 8 players in each event progressed to the quarter final
knockout stage. In the girls quarter finals Sky Higley (Denholm)
beat Louisa Goldie (Drumlanrig) 15-4; Chloe Blaikie (Drumlanrig)
beat Poppie Gibson (Stirches) 15-7; Samantha Wallace (Stirches)
beat Esther Presley (Denholm) 15-6 and Sarah Murphy-Clark (Stirches)
beat Eilidh Garden (Stirches) 15-7. Chloe Blaikie beat Sky
Higley 21-14 in the first semi final and Sarah Murphy-Clark beat
Samantha Wallace 24-22 in the second semi final.
The final of the girls
competition was contested between Chloe Blaikie and Sarah
Murphy-Clark. Despite a spirited performance by Chloe, Sarah went on to win the final match
21-19, 21-12. Congratulations to Sarah Murphy-Clark for winning the
girls competition and to both girls for serving up a cracking
girls final.
In the boys quarter
finals Martin Goldie (Drumlanrig) beat Aiden Middlemass (Stirches)
15-1; Samuel Middlemass (Stirches) beat Sam Allott (Denholm)
15-13; Beck Malcolm (Stirches) beat Lewis Smith (Newcastleton)

semi final and Beck Malcolm beat Connor Mitchell 21-10 in
the second semi final. The final was a re-run of last years
final and was contested between Martin Goldie
and Beck Malcolm. Despite his best efforts Beck found it
hard to cope with the powerful smashes and well executed
drop shots produced by Martin throughout the final and
Martin won the final 21-4, 21-2. Congratulations to Martin
Goldie for winning the boys competition and to both boys for
giving the spectators an exciting boys final.
Both Sarah and Martin
have continued to develop at the sport this season and
Martin has had success in other tournaments this season,
winning the Kelso primary tournament and reaching the semi
finals of the Duns Primary and Borders Primary tournaments.
Martin is also part of the Borders U12 squad and has participated
in inter area tournaments.
Stirches took the team
award. After the finals, Colin Blaikie gave the vote of thanks
and the prizes were presented by Borders squad member
Sophie Mitchell. The winners each received a racket and
runners up each received a drinks bottle courtesy of BADMINTONscotland.
The coaches would like to
