Hawick & District
Primary School Championship
(2014)
Hawick &
District primary schools held their annual badminton competition
at Hawick High School games hall on Sunday, 30 March, 2014.
The initial stage of the
well attended tournament was played in round robin pools
with 21 girls placed into four pools and 7 boys placed in a
single pool.
Two girls
from each of the girls pools progressed to the quarter-final
knockout stage. In the girls quarter-finals Mia Presslie (Denholm)
beat Louisa Goldie (Drumlanrig) 21-15; Amber Malcolm (Stirches)
beat Phoebe Gale (Denholm) 21-2; Sophie Mitchell (Newcastleton)
beat Connie Richards (Denholm) 21-5 and Lily Towers (Denholm)
beat Sarah Murphy-Clark (Stirches) 21-5. Amber Malcolm beat Mia
Presslie 21-4 in the first semi-final and Sophie Mitchell beat
Lily Towers 21-8 in the second semi-final.
The final of the girls
competition was contested between Amber Malcolm and Sophie
Mitchell. Despite a spirited performance by Sophie with some
hard fought, long rallies, Amber went on to win the final match
21-5, 21-5. Congratulations to Amber Malcolm for winning the
girls competition and to both girls for serving up a cracking
girls final.
In the boys competition
four boys progressed from the pool games to the semi-final
knockout stage. Martin Goldie (Drumlanrig) beat Sam Allott (Denholm)
21-12 in the first semi-final and Beck Malcolm (Stirches)
beat Connor Mitchell (Newcastleton) 21-11 in the second
semi-final. The final was contested between Martin Goldie
and Beck Malcolm. Despite his best efforts Beck found it
hard to cope with the powerful smashes and well executed
drop shots produced by Martin throughout the final and
Martin won the final 21-6, 21-3. Congratulations to Martin
Goldie for winning the boys competition and to both boys for
giving the spectators an exciting boys final.
Both Amber and Martin
have continued to develop at the sport this season and
Martin is part of the Borders U12 team that has participated
in inter area tournaments. The coaches would like to thank
Roxburgh Sports Council for the £200 funding that Martin
received this season to help with his travel expenses.
Denholm took the team
award. After the finals, Colin Blaikie gave the vote of thanks
and the prizes were presented by Nancy Morrison. The winners and
runners up received rackets courtesy of BADMINTONscotland with
the winners rackets signed by the 2014 Scotland Team.
The coaches would like to
thank everyone that scored games throughout the day and Hawick
High School for the use of the hall. The coaches would also like
to thank all the parents and friends who came along to support
the tournament.
