As part of
the Vision 2014 project for the Year of Sport 2012, Active
Schools Hawick and Hawick Junior Badminton Club offered every
primary seven pupil in the Hawick and District area the
opportunity to try badminton at the first Hawick Junior
Badminton Club Festival on Friday, November 2, when children
were introduced to the sport, had some fun and tried out some
games. The youngsters also sampled five different badminton
skill stations such as 'Fitness Challenge', 'Target Practice'
and 'Beat the Pro', and took in an exhibition match featuring
some of the Borders' best junior and adult players. Primary
seven pupils from seven local schools were represented with one
session in the morning and a second in the afternoon.
Local
badminton coaches Colin Blaikie and Harry Turnbull would like to
thank Scott Renwick, the high school's head of PE, for the use
of the main games hall; Paul Scott, the active schools
coordinator, for his help organising the event; the sports
leaders from the high school; badminton players and coaches from
the Borders Badminton Group, and finally all the teachers who
helped on the day to make the festival such a great experience
for the youngsters.
